When your thyroid gland ceases to produce the right amount of the necessary hormones to properly regulate your metabolism this is called a hypothyroid or hypothyroidism. There are a number of things that a person can look for to figure out if they need to visit the doctor to be checked for a thyroid issue. Many people that suffer from an underactive thyroid suffer form depression as well. As for some of the physical issues there are muscles aches, heavier menstrual periods for the women, unusual amounts of weight gain, weak muscles and ever things like pale skin and constipation. The problems with a self diagnosis based off of most of the symptoms of hypothyroidism is that they are not solely attributed to an underactive thyroid gland they can be signs of some other serious and even not so serious things.

If you have any reason to believe that you may have an under active thyroid then you need to talk to your doctor right away so that you can be diagnosed and get on an effective treatment plan. The problems only get worse if left untreated so do not take your symptoms lightly. IF you get it under control fast hen your hypothyroidism will not control your life and the symptoms of hypothyroidism will all but disappear.
